New Specimen Update 08 March 2019

5 March 2019

This week we have a magnificent and varied selection of minerals from our very own fair shores of British localities:

  • A classic Geevor mine specimen of nail head Chalcocite measuring to 1.7cm tall and displaying a well-formed cap on a striated prismatic crystal. Many of these unusual Chalcocites came out of the mine in the very late 1970s to early 1980s
  • An unusual and rare specimen of wheat-sheaf habit Calcite crystals from North Crofty mine at Pool, Carn Brea, Cornwall; now part of the more well-known South Crofty mine. Both main Calcite crystals measure 3.5cm long and splay out to 2cm at their broader ends. An interesting Cornish specimen of rare habit
  • A beautifully aesthetic botryoidal Goethite forming undulating mid to dark chocolate-brown mounds, from the Restormel Royal Iron mine at Lostwithiel in Cornwall. Much of the upper face is coated with a drusy layer of glassy Quartz crystals in shades of flesh-pink, colourless and black
  • A showy specimen of acidic, mustard-yellow Pyromorphite crystals, very richly coating a cellular vuggy matrix of fine-grained vein Quartz from Roughton Gill, in the Caldbeck Fells, Cumbria
  • A splendid bed of lustrous brownish-black Cassiterite crystals to 1.7cm, covering a milky-Quartz fracture surface on light grey killas. A very rich and showy example from the famous Trevaunance mine at St. Agnes in Cornwall
  • A magnificent Calcite specimen from the Egremont mining district of west Cumbria. Colourless and glassy modified scalenohedral Calcite crystals to 3cm cover a matrix of earthy limonitic Hematite. A west Cumbrian classic!
