New Americas Update 08 September 2020

8 September 2020

This week we’ve moved across to the Americas, showcasing a selection of fabulous specimens from Latin America, the USA and Canada. Giving a flavour of what is on offer, we begin by featuring a most beautiful gem Tourmaline; delicate, red velvety Chalcotrichite and toffee-like Wulfenite crystals looking good enough to eat!

Let’s start with the Elbaite Tourmaline. From Governador Valadares in Brazil, this single crystal is a showstopping greenish indigo-blue with a deep gemmy crimson-red termination. It’s amazing! Chalcotrichite is a variety of the copper oxide Cuprite, which takes the form of delicate hair-like needles, the colour of crushed strawberries with a gorgeous silky lustre; this specimen is from Ray mine in the Dripping Spring Mountains of Arizona. Our final appetiser is a stunning cluster of lustrous, bright toffee-orange tabular Wulfenite crystals which form sandwiched layers of orange and tangerine; this is from the classic Erupción mine at Los Lamentos, Mexico.

Other terrific specimens to look out for today include many beautiful miniature Tourmalines from various gem mines in California and Brazil; a super golden-yellow Mimetite from Santa Eulalia in Mexico; a large tabular crystal of metallic grey Columbite from Minas Gerais, Brazil and delightful inky indigo-sapphire blue crystals of the phosphate Lazulite from the famous occurrence at Rapid Creek in Yukon, Canada, an area where mineral collecting is now strictly forbidden.

We hope you enjoy today’s choices from the Americas and that there may be a specimen or two you fancy.
