New Western Europe Update 15 September 2020

15 September 2020

This week our mineralogical globetrot takes us to Western Europe and what a smorgasbord we have to offer including, appropriately, two great specimens from Sweden.

As with tradition, we will begin by showcasing three terrific specimens which reflect the diversity and quality of today’s array. Two of these are from Greece with third from a little known locality in Austria. Beginning in Greece we have a quite charming Azurite on Malachite from the classic Lavrion mining district on the Attica Peninsula. Spherical aggregates of inky-blue Azurite are densely scattered over light peppermint-green velvety Malachite, making a stunning large miniature.

Next, sailing east into the Aegean Sea, we arrive at the island of Serifos, from where we have a simply delightful bed of Andradite Garnet crystals covering a silky, sage-green matrix of Hedenbergite. Scattered over the garnets are around 30 clusters of Hematite platelets forming Hematite Roses.

Then north to Austria and to an Aragonite occurrence at Maria Alm, west of Salzburg. A 3.5 cm diameter sphere of delicate colourless Aragonite crystals perch on a tan matrix, looking rather splendid.

Other goodies include a quite amazing Quartz crystal from Teufelsmühle mountain in Austria. It is amazing, so rather than attempt to describe it here, go take a look and we think you’ll be impressed. Other great specimens from Lavrion include an apple-green Smithsonite and a zingy-green Adamite. And look out for some really good rarities including a Mellite from Hungary and Richterite and Strengite, both from Sweden. Enjoy and hopefully you’ll find something just destined for your collection!
