New Western Europe Update 18 September 2020

18 September 2020

Our Friday update is here yet again, and we continue this week’s mineralogical meanderings through Western Europe. As always, we have a marvellous selection of first-class specimens for you to drool over, ever hoping you will spot one or two which will fill those pesky gaps in your collection! We begin with three specimens which appeal to us and impart a flavour of what awaits further perusal.

So, let’s kick-off in France and the wonderful Les Farges mine, world famous for its amazing Pyromorphites. The specimen we offer today is not typical of Les Farges, in that the spring leaf-green Pyromorphite crystals cluster together in tall, vertical, botryoidal plumes.

From Austria we have a remarkable Hematite from the Zillertal valley, so aesthetic and perfect that it clearly demonstrates even the humblest of species can attain world-class status. And then to Pöhla in Saxony, stunning deep golden-amber Baryte crystals with a brilliant glassy lustre coat a matrix of pale green massive Fluorite.

To continue this summary with a few more outstanding specimens is a difficult task as I’m spoilt for choice. However, a Native Silver from the Pöhla-Tellerhäuser mine in Saxony is nothing short of magnificent and worthy of any museum. As a great admirer of Lavrion, three very different Smithsonites must be mentioned: two of vivid greenish-turquoise and one almost pure creamy-white. We have two wonderful Quartz groups, one perfectly exhibiting Dauphiné habit terminations and from the Dauphiné region itself, and finally a sublime Pyromorphite from Bad Ems in Germany, composed from choice prismatic hexagonal crystals of characteristic light pinkish-clove-brown.

Enjoy our final lap of Western Europe and we hope you find that must-have specimen!
