New Tsumeb Update 29 September 2020

29 September 2020

This week we focus on just one locality, the Tsumeb mine in Namibia, famous for its amazing number of different mineral species, varieties and pseudomorphs and almost always forming highly aesthetic specimens which make for wonderful collections and displays. This famous mine began operation towards the close of the nineteenth century and went on to produce the incredible specimens we now know and love, over the following 100 years.

Some of our favourites this week include a miniature Malachite pseudomorph after Azurite with Azurite crystals, the Malachite forming bright emerald green pseudomorphs with the most fabulous satin lustre. Next, we have a flat bed of transparent, colourless rhombohedral Calcite crystals set against a deep cherry to crimson-red Dolomite matrix. Another terrific specimen has an estimated 50 caramel-lemon prismatic Wulfenite crystals with a brilliant lustre sat on micro-hexagonal milky-white Calcite crystals, frequently with dark chocolate edges. Fantastic!

Also look out for a fine selection of Smithsonites and Calcites, all showing the diverse colour and range in crystal habits found throughout the Tsumeb ore body. There is a very nicely crystallised yellow Tsumcorite, a sweet little emerald-green Dioptase on snow-white Calcite and an amazing Dolomite formed as nested spherical shell-like casts mimicking what was probably underlying botryoidal smithsonite.

Tsumeb has produced a treasure trove of wonderful minerals; we hope you discover one or two to add to your collection.
