New Southern Hemisphere Update 03 November 2020

3 November 2020

Having survived the terrors of Halloween, especially the terrible puns, we come down a few levels this week to relax and bask in the Southern Hemisphere. The World, the southern half that is, is our oyster and we have a wide and varied selection of minerals to offer, including some interesting and rare species.

Beginning in Africa, Ramansdrift Farm 135 is almost as far south in Namibia as is possible to travel, sitting less than 10 km from the South African border. From here we have a double-terminated Quartz sceptre of deep inky amethystine purple with shades graduating towards pale lavender and colourless, forming interwoven diaphanous clouds and wisps of great beauty.

Moving north a little, but fear not, remaining below the Equator, a pink Cobaltoan Smithsonite from the Tsumeb mine, always a collector’s favourite. Rounded, bubble gum-pink translucent Smithsonite crystals with a brushed satin lustre form a compact cluster over a Calcite and Galena-rich matrix.

And from Brumado in Brazil, two sharply formed crystals of Dolomite on rhombic crystals of Magnesite. The gemmy Dolomite crystals are colour zoned from colourless to a light golden sherry-yellow, a beautiful and unusual specimen.

Other southern treats include a Tourmaline, most probably Elbaite, forming an intense deep indigo-blue prism with a black flat pinacoid termination. When back-lit, horizontal bands of dark wispy Indicolite pervade the incredibly beautiful deep indigo crystal. A superb small miniature of deep inky cornflower-blue crystallised Vauxite from Siglo Veinte mine in Bolivia and a fascinating specimen of sooty-black Goethite coating sharp and crisp pseudomorphs of Cerussite after Anglesite from Broken Hill, are all part of today’s showcase.

Buckle your virtual seatbelts, get ready for a whirlwind mineralogical tour and indulge in a little Southern comfort! It’s a great selection and hopefully something will take your fancy.
