New Ian's Picks Update 20 November 2020

20 November 2020

The selection of specimens for each weekly update is made by just a few of the Crystal Classics’ team, but this week we are privileged to have seen Mr Ian Bruce himself trawling the displays and drawers to make his very own selection, and what a selection it is!

It will come as no surprise Ian’s Pick includes some rather tasty specimens from all around the world. On Tuesday he focused on Tourmaline, but today he plays his wildcard, with no holds barred on species or locality, so get ready for an international mineralogical mystery tour while keeping a sharp lookout for many fabulous specimens of museum quality. Ready?

So, starting on a high note with precious metals, we have a wonderfully crystallised Native Gold from Nevada and a spectacular wire Native Silver from Saxony. The Gold is from the Round Mountain mine and displays stunning arborescent dendritic and herringbone structures of buttery-yellow bright metallic Native Gold, many crystals to over 2 cm and criss-crossing the surface piled one above another.

The Native Silver is from the historic Freiberg Mining District of Germany and encapsulates in miniature all that one admires in a large museum specimen. Several thin wires of Native Silver stand vertically up to 5.5 cm tall, surrounded by several smaller twisted ramshorn wires on a matrix glistening with micro-crystals of colourless Quartz.

The last of our featured highlights is a remarkable Fluorite with Quartz from the famous Elmwood mine in Tennessee, USA. A large cubic Fluorite crystal with one corner optically ice-clear and containing no imperfections or inclusions and of quite remarkable gem quality. This abruptly changes to rich lavender Fluorite with a geometric pattern of slightly curved cubic patterned faces dusted with sparkling micro-crystals of colourless Quartz. Gazing into the pale lemon-tinged gemmy corner is like looking into a total void of empty space. It is quite sensational!

This Friday’s selection is packed full of other showstoppers, including a world-class Malachite pseudomorph after Azurite with Cerussite from Tsumeb; an amazing bed of lilac Fluorapatite crystals from the Mawi pegmatite in Afghanistan; wonderful deep cranberry-red Liddicoatite Tourmaline crystals embedded amongst Quartz and Feldspar from the Antsikoza pegmatite in Madagascar, and two amazing Rhodochrosites from the famed N'Chwaning 2 mine in the Kalahari Manganese Field of South Africa.

Ian’s work is now done, and it is now your turn to get busy looking through his pick’s. See if you agree with his choices, we hope so, and even better, you may just make you own pick to add a little something to your own collection. Good luck and enjoy.

Here is what you have to look forward to in next week's updates:
