New Year, New Finds Update 05 January 2021

5 January 2021

The entire team here at Crystal Classics take this opportunity to wish all our readers and customers a very Happy, and more poignantly, a healthy and safe-from-Covid-19 New Year. Let us hope as the vaccination rate accelerates, we move towards a more normal and routine world.

We begin our first week with New Finds for the New Year and are featuring a fabulous selection of Namibian Fluorites, African pseudomorphed Chrysocollas and fine Marcasite crystals from France.

Travelling from north to south let’s begin with the cliff exposure of Marcasite at Cap Blanc-Nez, just west of Calais in northern France. Beautifully crystallised silvery-golden Marcasite occurs here in nodular clusters, forming splendid crystals which vary in their growth patterns from nested chevrons to overlapping fish scale-like plates. This is one of the world’s premier localities for Marcasite and today we offer an exciting selection of miniatures.

Next to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a stunning new find of intensely sky-blue Chrysocolla pseudomorphing after Malachite, which itself pseudomorphed tall spear-like crystals of Azurite. To add sparkle, the Chrysocolla is encrusted in micro-crystals of lustrous glassy Quartz. This discovery was made in the Tenke-Fungurume area which delineates a 30 km copper-cobalt mineralised zone between Tenke hill and Fungurume hill in the Kolwezi mining district of the DRC. The range in structural habit is immense and the colour of the Chrysocolla stunning.

Then finally further south to the old classic locality of the Okorusu mine in the Otjiwarongo District of Namibia. Fluorite from the Okorusu mine is distinctive for its green, blue and purple zoning and has become a collector’s favourite. The Fluorite crystals are mainly transparent with patchy opaque centres, with some displaying rotated cubic phantoms and wispy tadpole-like micro-inclusions. The colours and zoning are quite sensational!

We welcome you in joining us for our first mineralogical pick of 2021. The beginning of January is often a somewhat dull period following the Christmas and New Year celebrations, so this is a good opportunity to get back enjoying the minerals we love so passionately. We hope you find our New Finds interesting and exciting. Enjoy!
