Many of the St. Just mines are well known for producing a variety of minerals. Of particular interest are the many forms of Calcite that came from the Levant Mine, and later from the Geevor Mine. This specimen from the Levant Mine displays a matrix of prismatic Quartz crystals measuring to 3cm tall. The Quartz crystals are preferentially coated with reddish Hematite, which in turn is richly covered by Calcite. The Calcite forms well developed tabular crystals mostly to around 0.6cm, growing almost at right angles to the Quartz. The Calcite crystals are light creamy white with a fine luster. Here and there are small areas of dark metallic grey Chalcocite. An excellent specimen from a mine that closed just after the first World War.
