The ancient mining district of Roșia Montană lies in the mountainous region of Alba County in eastern central Romania. The mines are rich in many metals, but amongst mineral collectors Gold is probably the most well know species. This charming small cabinet specimen features a slightly tapering block of light whitish grey granitic matrix whose flat top surface is richly coated with mats of filigree wire Native Gold. The Gold forms interwoven millimetre scale wires producing thin yet dense mats with a structure and texture of fine cotton wool. The Native Gold is of metallic buttery golden yellow which presents a matt surface, while individual wires are patches are reflective and bright. A great Native Gold form this most famous Romanian locality.
