Charlesite is a very rare calcium-aluminium sulphate and a member of the Ettringite group.  This species is found at very few locations and can occur in many colour forms and habits.  This specimen, from the N'Chwaning I mine in the Kalahari Manganese Field of Northern Cape Province, South Africa is exceptional for its richness, colour and size.  An off-matrix specimen, the entire specimen is composed of crystallised, bright acid lemon-yellow Charlesite crystals, resembling native sulphur.  The crystals have a waxy, vitreous lustre and can be seen to have developed in parallel alignment when turned in incident light.  A remarkable specimen of this rare mineral.
