Fluorite and Halides

ID: CC10806
An old-time large cabinet specimen of siskin sage green micro-crystals of Pyromorphite.  These form a drusy coating over an undulating iron-rich earthy matrix, coated with subby, rusty apricot Quartz crystals.  It is from Holzappel in the Rhineland-Palatinate of Germany.  Although not stated on the labels, this is most probably from the Holzappel mine.  None of the Pyromorphite crystals exceed more than just a few millimetres and form attractive hemispherical domes and ridges masking the underlying Quartz.  Ex. the Mineral Collection of Archduke Stephan Franz Viktor of Hungary (1817 to 1867), with a historic Archduke (Erzherzog) Stephan label incorporating his coat of arms.  This label measures 5.5 x 4.7 cm and has been severely trimmed, so losing both sides and possibly some of the hand-written text.   Having said this, the label does appear to have been printed as a smaller size label compared to the usual large format, hence probably the top and bottom are of original size, that is pre-trimmed.  The Coat of Arms remains fully intact but a lot of printed text has been lost.  It is understood these labels were trimmed by curators at the Museum of Natural History at the Humboldt University in Berlin, to fit within their specimen boxes, after being bequeathed by Carl Rumpff’s widow in late 1889.  The label is numbered 109/49 and a small label bearing 109/46 is glued beneath the specimen together with a Carl Rumpff label, dated 1889.  Another very old, simple label with just two handwritten words of the locality also accompanies the specimen.
