An excellent deep golden-honey to deep butterscotch skewed octagonal crystal of Mellite from Artern in the Unstrut Valley of Thuringia, Germany. Mellite is an very unusual organic compound, an aluminium benzene hexacarboxylate hydrate.  This specimen is a modified tetragonal crystal, appearing semi-octahedral and of considerable size.  The faces are skewed away from a square cross-section to form a lozenge shaped crystal. One face displays a number of smaller compound tetragonal faces in epitaxial alignment to the main face.  The specimen is mounted on a small, elegant, glazed white porcelain pedestal, attached by honey-coloured wax.
