Two interpenetrant, part-cubic crystals of Fluorite from the enigmatic and highly sought after Rotherhope Fell mine, close to the town of Alston, on Alston Moor in eastern Cumbria. The two part-crystals have edges measuring 4.4 cm and 3.9 cm, although with most of each crystal missing due to natural cleavage across the point of attachment while in-situ. Interestingly, all these broken faces across the back and base appear to be partly re-healed with Fluorite overgrowths and small areas of micro-crystallised Pyrite. Although there is some damage to one top edge and a corner, this is probably one of the most stunning colour-zoned crystals we have seen from Rotherhope Fell, a mine made famous because of its unusually coloured and wonderfully zoned Fluorite crystals. The zoning is too complex to accurately describe here but can be seen well in the accompanying photos. The near surface zone is stunning with inter-banded indigo, pale blue and colourless, grading to an inner core of intermixed purple, pale cherry-red and smoky mauve. Under LWUV the entire specimen fluoresces bright lavender, white and purple, with the zoned colour banding clearly visible. It is a beautiful Fluorite from Rotherhope Fell mine, one of the premier and most iconic Fluorite locations in the British Isles.
