This large ex-matrix, clove-brown Topaz crystal is from the amazing gem pegmatites at Volodarsk-Volynskii in the Ukraine. Since 2015 this area is now named Khoroshiv but, no doubt, will remain as Volodarsk-Volynskii to collectors of its wonderful gem specimens for many years to come. Measuring 10.3 cm tall, the crystal is nicely terminated, displaying all the characteristic faces associated with a classically developed Topaz. The base is cleaved revealing a lozenge-shaped cross section. Its colour, although generally light clove, adopts peachy hues when back-lit, which also reveals its semi-transparent quality. All prism and termination faces are a naturally micro-etched to a matt satin lustre and it is likely that if this outer layer was clear, then the inner crystal is probably quite gemmy. A magnificent Topaz from the Volodarsk-Volynskii chamber pegmatites.
