The Weardale Valley in County Durham contains an abundance of Fluorite localities and the list of mine and quarries is strewn with some of the most famous names known to collectors of British minerals.  But one name above all leaps out from the page and that is Middlehope Shield mine close to Westgate.  The historic discovery in autumn 1818 encountered the first recorded occurrence of emerald green Fluorite in Weardale and for a time the crystals were indeed thought to be Emerald.  This small cabinet specimen is a rare and beautiful example from this find and displays all the characteristics singular to Middlehope Shield.  If discovered amongst modern collections these specimens are usually attributed to the Heights mine or quarry, but are distinct because of their slightly bevelled, rounded edges and the characteristic arenaceous sandy limestone matrix.  Together these traits confirm the true identity.  Slightly elongated cubic crystals to 1.9 cm long form a rich group of interpenetrant twins of gemmy leafy emerald green, some showing colour zoning as interwoven bands of green and lilac.  The Fluorite exhibits good natural daylight fluorescence and under LWUV turns bright lavender purple.  A Weardale classic and a must for inclusion in any serious Weardale Fluorite collection.
