In 1977 I was lucky enough to make an underground visit to Tynagh mine, an experience I shall never forget in then, perhaps the most advanced polymetallic mine in Europe.  The mine sadly closed in 1982 and what relatively few specimens were preserved are now highly valued amongst collectors.  This large lead-zinc-copper deposit was highly oxidised and hosted almost 100 species.  It is known to have contained countless museum grade specimens, the majority of which passed through the crushers.  This superb, large cabinet specimen of Azurite with Malachite is one of the seldom seen larger specimens from Tynagh, which was situated near to Killimor in County Galway, Ireland.  Composed entirely of Azurite and Malachite, the Azurite forms 1 mm crystals making up the majority of the specimen, with a 7 x 2.5 cm area of dark earthy green Malachite at one end.  A small (4 x 3 mm) pistachio green patch of possible Bayldonite or even Hawleyite sits in the Azurite towards the opposite end to the Malachite.
