An aesthetic and intriguing cabinet specimen from Baia Sprie in Romania. A single, well-developed Scheelite crystal measuring to 1.1 cm displays perfectly set against a creamy druse of Dolomite crystals mostly covering the lower faces of a tall and slender tapering translucent Quartz crystal over 13 cm long, with some parallel growth apparent. The Scheelite, a calcium tungstate, is a steeply formed octahedral crystal of lustrous light grey and black. This fluoresces weakly under both LW and SWUV, ethereal yellow in LW and an almost imperceivable deep red under SW. More fluorescent is an area of the Dolomite surrounding the Scheelite, this also showing a tan hue in normal light. I wondered if this indicates a repair, but under magnification I can see no evidence for this, so it is probably a natural phenomenon. The tall, elegant Quartz crystal is predominantly milky, but in certain light a very pale, amethyst lilac tint is detectable.
