Hematite var. Kidney Ore

ID: CC12866
The Kidney Ore variety of Hematite from the west Cumbrian iron mines was once plentiful when mining operations were in full swing, but it is now becoming a most sought-after variety.  This excellent small cabinet/large miniature is from the Florence mine, adjacent to the town of Egremont.  The reddish chocolate brown Hematite forms a reniform rib of gently rolling botryoidal surfaces dusted with micro-crystals of black specular Hematite.  And I do mean micro!  On what would be considered the back face, a beautiful, roughly 2.5 x 1 cm of rich red Eisenkiesel covers the surface.  Eisenkiesel is a variety of Quartz coloured intense red or orange red by micro-inclusions of Hematite.
