HEMIMORPHITE

ID: CC12934

A 7 mm thick crust of vivid turquoise Hemimorphite crystals forms an undulating botryoidal crust over a rusty orange-brown and deep salmon-pink limonitic matrix.  At one side of the specimen, attached to the matrix, is a small 1.5 x 1 cm group of peppermint-green botryoidal Malachite sprays.  This beautiful example of Hemimorphite is from the Kipushi Mine (formerly Prince LĂ©opold Mine) at Kipushi, Katanga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  The zinc-lead-copper orebody is also rich in many other metals and occurs in a sequence of dolomites and schists.  An excellent display specimen from this famous mine in the DRC.
