As well as dealing in mineral specimens, Richard Barstow was one of Britain’s most active field collectors with an exceptionally high success rate.  One of his famous projects was to expose part of the Roughton Gill South vein on the slopes of Great Lingy Hill at the head of Roughton Gill.  Once more he struck richly mineralised ore, particularly rich in Pyromorphite.  The exposure was christened Barstow’s Cut (also known as Barstow’s Trench) and was still clearly visible well into the 1990s.  This beautiful cabinet specimen has a Quartz veinstone matrix richly covered in pistachio-green and brilliant lemon-yellow Pyromorphite forming hexagonal crystals to 1 cm tall by about 5 mm diameter.  Many of the lemon crystals have lustrous glassy prism faces and matt powder-lemon pinacoids.  The green crystals tend to form more complex habits, with curved barrel-shaped prisms, hopper terminations and multiple, nested hexagonal terminations of alternating pistachio and deeper olive-green.  A gorgeous Pyromorphite and a fitting reminder of Dick Barstow who tragically died at the far-too-early age of 35 in 1982.
