Although the famous Florence mine close to Egremont in west Cumbria produced less than ten different mineral species, all of these can crystallise in the most exquisite way. This small cabinet specimen has about 16 semi-transparent, double terminated Quartz crystals richly placed across a thin matrix of “kidney ore” Hematite coated with lustrous cream-white Dolomite crystals and black metallic “specular” Hematite. The Quartz crystals measure to 2.2 cm across; are slightly smoky and contain inclusions of finely-divided “specular” Hematite. A beautiful example of Quartz with typical associated minerals from the now-closed Florence mine in Cumbria, England.
