West Pasture mine, just north of Stanhope in Weardale, is famous for its beautiful apple green Fluorite, a colour just about unique to this mine and making it a firm favourite with collectors. This large cabinet specimen is a superb example, displaying partly transparent Fluorite crystals to 1.8 cm forming a crowning ridge along its crest (or along one side). As is the case at West Pasture, the Fluorite mainly occurs as single crystals, all of the characteristic light, slightly acidic apple green which grade to a translucent creamy apple towards their centres. The matrix is an altered limestone and along one side an excellent vein section is exposed, providing a nice insight to the sequence of mineralisation. Fluorite crystals cover the back of the specimen but are largely coated with a deep chocolate brown Ankerite which also covers most of the matrix on the display face. Although Sphalerite is not recorded from this mine in mindat, what almost certainly look like corroded Sphalerite crystals pepper the Ankerite and also form a continuous seam within the exposed vein. We have tested this for hardness using various fine jets of micro-beads of different known hardness, confirming Sphalerite rather than Galena. Please also note that green Fluorite from West Pasture should be stored in a dark place, i.e. a drawer, not a cabinet, as the colour will imperceptibly fade over the years from its original glory.
