Like so many young mineral collectors, one of the first specimens I ever owned was a tumble-polished golden Tiger’s Eye.  My specimen came on special offer with McDougall’s Flour by collecting tokens from the packets!  The matching pair we have here really elevate Tiger’s Eye to a whole new level.  The polished faces of these two specimens are opposite faces from a common sawn-cut block.  The polished faces display fabulous chatoyancy, the light dispersal effect observed in a cat’s eyes.  Tiger’s Eye is actually pseudocrocidolite, a chatoyant golden-yellow fibrous variety of Quartz.  The back of each half displays the natural, unpolished habit of this most attractive mineral.  This specimen come form the classic deposits within the Northern Cape Province of South Africa and is accompanied with a lovely ‘F.H. Butler, late Talling, Natural History Dealer’ label of 180, Brompton Road, London, S.W.’  The label reads “Quartz in the form of Crocidolite, S. Africa”.
