Opal is probably the mineral synonymous with Australia.  This splendid example is set in a limestone matrix with an outer surface layer of dark to light limonitic-brown; the creamy-pink limestone, full of fossil marine fauna, is visible in a 6 x 3.5 cm patch where the specimen has been detached form in-situ. The Opal occurs as quite large patches (up to 4.5 x 1.5 cm) and as thin stringers, varying in colour from colourless, peach and milky-blue-white through to stunning sapphire-blue with flashes of emerald-green.  A great specimen of Opal and a fine example for display.
