Crednerite

ID: CC13409
A terrific thumbnail of the rare copper-manganese oxide Crednerite, forming platy black crystals to 1.8 cm long, visible on opposite faces of a small Calcite-Crednerite nodule.  This is from Torr Works Quarry at Cranmore in Somerset, only about 3 km due east of Shepton Mallet.  Torr Works is a massive quarry which is still in full operation although, sadly for mineral collectors, the manganese pods containing the rare oxychloride suite have long since disappeared as the working faces move further away.  This quarry is often recorded as Merehead Quarry on specimen labels; this along with Torr Works are synonymous, although the latter is the correct name.  Some of the black Crednerite plates appear green due to the presence of inclusions of fine acicular Malachite.
