Hematite with Var. Specularite and Quartz

ID: CC13478
As with many operational mines, the flow of superb specimens appeared never-ending from Florence mine near to Egremont in Cumbria, England.  Beautifully crystallised Hematite and Quartz were all too common until the mine eventually closed in 2007.  What had been considered common material amongst British collections suddenly became scarce and although not that many years have passed, good specimens are increasingly difficult to find.  This large miniature (or small cabinet) has a massive Hematite matrix almost entirely covered with beautifully crystalised lustrous and jet-black Specularite, a variety of Hematite.  Colourless Quartz crystals sit amongst the Specularite here and there, with the largest Quartz measuring 7 mm across.   A great example of Specular Hematite.
