This fine small cabinet specimen of the copper sulphide Chalcocite forms thin hexagonal plates that are well protected amongst botryoidal druses of micro-crystalline milky Quartz. The Chalcocite crystals average around 4 mm across flats, although some larger crystals attain 7 to 8 mm. As is so typical with Chalcocite from Levant mine, near the village of Trewellard at St Just in Cornwall, the crystals tend to have a sooty matt surface, although there are exceptions where the crystal faces adopt a dull metallic lustre, sometimes with a play of delicate iridescent colours. A well crystallised Chalcocite from Levant, which must contain in the order of 100 crystals lining the elongated vugs.
