The mineralogy of the west Cumbrian iron mines tends to be simple, yet the specimens produced represent some of the finest of their species in the world.  Just think of Baryte, Calcite, Hematite, Fluorite and Quartz.  Superb single and double terminated Quartz crystals are iconic from around the towns of Frizington and Egremont and occur as colourless, smoky and red, the latter coloured by fine inclusions of Hematite.  This amazing large cabinet specimen is from the Frizington area and forms an almost 16 x 15 cm arrow-shaped plate covered with excellent, mainly double terminated stubby Quartz crystals most of which are included with smoky burgundy red Hematite in their surface layers.  The majority of the Quartz is therefore the variety Eisenkiesel, although some of the double terminated crystals display one milky half and one red half.  Individual Quartz crystals have grown to over 3 cm between flats and form stubby double terminated crystals made up of two back-to-back hexagonal terminations and no prism body.  A dusting of 1 mm metallic black Specular Hematite crystals are scattered over the surface, making a fabulous specimen from the Frizington mining district.
