I am in a quandary regarding this specimen. It is labelled “Cross Fell, Cumbria, England”, yet believe it to be from Virtuous Lady mine at Buckland Monachorum in Devon. So what do I do? Well, I’ve settled on an honest approach, so declaring the uncertainty. Should anyone reading this be familiar with capped Quartz from Cross fell, then I would be delighted to hear from you and will amend this description accordingly. It remains labelled Cross Fell, as this is the locality which came with the specimen, although there is no past label accompanying it now. It is a very fine example of a Capped Quartz, whereby a terminated Quartz crystal fits perfectly into an exact cast in a block of Quartz above. The two are able to separate due to a thin film of clay within the crystal structure. Although known from other British localities, Wheal Jane and Geevor for example, the most famous occurrence is that at Virtuous Lady mine by Buckland Monachorum, as specimens very similar to this. The separated Quartz crystal measures just over 7 cm long and is 4.5 cm at the widest point across the termination. Even if the locality is uncertain, it remains an excellent specimen.
