Unlike anything we usually showcase, this museum-size specimen is a sawn and polished slab of Cotham Marble, a fossilised Stromatolite of Rhaetian age (around 105 Ma), the most recent Stage of the Triassic Period.  These magnificent fossil Stromatolites crop-out in certain areas of Somerset and when discovered during quarrying operations are prized finds.  This large and superbly polished slice perfectly displays the stromatolitic growth structures in dark grey dendritic plumes within interbedded horizons of alternating tan, grey and cream banding.  Both front and back faces have been polished to the same high standard while all four edges remain in their natural state.  This is an outstanding large specimen of this living fossil, displaying excellent growth structures.
