Of all Weardale’s Fluorite localities, specimens from the West Pasture mine, just north of Stanhope, are probably the most easily recognised because of their distinct and beautiful apple-green colour.  I have seen a lot of specimens from this mine and this one is a stunner.  It is impressive because of its colour, crystal size and size of specimen, being what I would class a large cabinet piece.  The cubic crystals are a delicate, yet strong, shade of crisp spring apple-green, a citrus-green colour and mouth watering.  Enhanced even further by its brilliant glassy lustre, the crystals average 1 to 1.5 cm on edge with the largest about 1.9 cm.  A few crystals across one edge are frosted snowy-white due to contact damage, but if anything, this adds a little contrast to the mainly uniform colour.  Preferential coatings of tiny sulphide crystals and micro-crystalline Quartz indicate the ‘way-up’ while in situ.  Small colourless Fluorite crystals have also developed in this band of late-stage mineral deposition.  Under LWUV the entire specimen fluoresces dull blueish-white.  Some Fluorite crystals around the edges are tinged delicate lavender, making a lovely aesthetic addition to this already fabulous specimen from West Pasture mine.  Please note, Fluorite from this mine is known to fade when exposed to sunlight, so it is recommended this is kept safe out of light to preserve its pristine condition.
