West Pasture mine, about 2 km north of Stanhope in Weardale, County Durham, England, is famous among collectors for its beautiful light apple green Fluorite, a colour just about unique to this locality. The shades of green do vary at West Pasture yet can aways be described as apple green, be this mild to crisp and zingy greens! This small miniature comprises of two joined cubic crystals, sitting is a stacked configuration, the smaller like a squat chimney on top of an engine house. The larger prism measure 22 x 20 x 15 mm while the smaller is 10 x 9 x 8 mm. The smaller crystal is capped with what first appears to be clear colourless Quartz, but is in fact flattened micro-crystals of Fluorite, one of which forms a interesting thin clear plate. Under LWUV the entire specimen fluoresces bright lavender blue. If you do purchase this or already have any West Pasture Fluorites in your collection, do keep them in a dark drawer or box and not on display in sunlight, otherwise the colour will imperceptibly fade over the years becoming almost colourless. Kept in the dark they remain perfect and beautiful.
