This excellent large cabinet specimen of flattened nail-head Calcite crystals is from one of the many mines along the Weardale valley in County Durham, famous for their Fluorite and Galena.  Occasionally at some of the mines, particularly good Calcite can occur and in numerous well-crystallised habits.  This beautiful specimen has mid-smoky-grey translucent Calcite crystals densely scattered all over, averaging between 1 to 2 cm diameter, but attaining 3 cm.  All the crystals are perfectly formed flattened hexagonal prisms of flying saucer-type habit, often with dark grey symmetric centre composed of micro Calcite crystals.  A very well priced impressive cabinet specimen of superbly crystallised Calcite from Weardale.
