Dark metallic grey dendrites and masses of the rare native silver amalgam Arquerite are frozen in a creamy-white Calcite matrix from the Arqueros Silver Mining District in Chile from where this alloy gets its name.  An amalgam is an alloy of mercury with another metal, in this case silver, resulting in the simple formula (Ag, Hg) and typically containing about 13% mercury.  This fine small cabinet specimen comes with an old American Museum of Natural History (Am. Mus. Nat. Hist.) label (No. 556) and a Lawrence Henry Conklin Collection label (4478).  It is interesting to note how heavy this relatively small specimen is, due to the high density of mercury of 13.5 g/cm3.  A great specimen of this interesting natural alloy.
