Native Gold

ID: CC14816
Leaves of Native Gold sit adjacent to a small vug in a sulphide-rich Quartz matrix.  This appears to be metamorphic due zones of strong foliation and mica content.  From the ancient Stüblbau gold mine, begun in 1577 and located on the northeast slope of Kareck mountain, SW of Schellgaden and SE Salzburg in Austria.  The Native Gold occurs as a 3 x 2 mm leaf close to a horn-like corner-edge of the matrix.  There might well be other patches of Native Gold but, if present, are camouflaged amongst the densely disseminated grains and micro-crystals of Pyrite, Chalcopyrite and possibly bronze coloured Pyrrhotite.
