A fine double terminated crystal of reddish-plum Liddicoatite Tourmaline from Fianarantsoa Province in southeast Madagascar. Fianarantsoa is a large province containing almost 130 recognised mineral localities but, like so often in Madagascar, more precise detail of the locality is lacking. This specimen displays an excellent crystal of Liddicoatite, measuring 2.8 x 1.5 x 1.3 cm and is attached along one side and part of its base to an aesthetic matrix of very well crystallised Cleavelandite, a platy variety of Albite Feldspar. It should be made clear there is currently dispute on the naming of this species, so therefore may be either Liddicoatite or Fluor-liddicoatite, but the differences in chemistry are pedantic for most collectors. The prism is perfectly terminated at both ends but is interrupted in the bottom termination by the Cleavelandite. The Liddicoatite is transparent to translucent and contains draped veils within the crystal structure. A choice miniature of this rare Tourmaline species from Madagascar.
