The village of Dognecea is set in a picturesque valley surrounded by wooded hillsides and the nearby mining area is host to a lead-zinc skarn deposit. Although the deposit has just over twenty mineral species, many of these are superbly crystallised, including this large cabinet specimen of Sphalerite with Quartz and Pyrite. It is one of those classic combination pieces where each mineral compliments the others. Completely masking a massive matrix of mixed Quartz and Sphalerite, an approximately 12 x 6 cm area of beautifully crystallised black Sphalerite with a bright metallic lustre contrasts adjacent to colourless acicular Quartz crystals to 1.3 cm and bright brassy cubic Pyrite crystals to 5 mm on edge. The Sphalerite forms crystals at many different sizes overlaying each other in clustered piles, the largest measuring 2.4 cm on edge. A magnificent Sphalerite with Quartz and Pyrite from the Dognecea mining district in Romania.
