Specimens of Amethyst Quartz occur within the Wölsendorf Fluorite Mining District in the Upper Palatinate of Bavaria, Germany, but rarely are specimens of this size and quality encountered in collections. This 18.2 x 12.5 cm plate of vividly coloured lilac to deep violet, stubby Amethyst crystals cover a matrix of sage to pea green Fluorite. The hexagonal and well terminated Amethyst crystals average 1 to 2 cm wide and 1 to 1.5 cm tall. In the gullies between each Amethyst crystal are riband-like trails of micro-sucrosic white Quartz crystals which highlight and delineate each individual Amethyst crystal. Towards one end, a 6 x 1 cm rib of pale salmon to cream Baryte blades protrude, although these are naturally heavily etched. A most striking large cabinet specimen of Amethyst with Baryte, Quartz and Fluorite from the Wölsendorf Fluorite Mining District.
