This rather spectacular, good sized cabinet specimen of pale green Adamite on pure snow white Aragonite is from the truly classic Lavrion mining district in the Attikí Prefecture of Greece. I have visited this wonderful district many times, an area buzzing with mineral localities wherever you turn and steeped in a mining history which goes back to pre-history. This beautiful specimen certainly would not look out of place in a major museum and once stood upright on its natural narrow base, one end displays a cockscomb of six individual Aragonite fingers, splayed outwards in a curved fan. The Aragonite forms a flattened plate with a slightly domed display surface. The back is flat from where it has been removed from in-situ and here areas of dark brick red cryptocrystalline Calcite are seen. The Aragonite’s display surface is entirely covered with sparkling micro crystals which give a rough texture like that of fine sandpaper. Scattered over this are numerous gemmy Adamite crystals of pale apple green, all of at least 5 mm long and many longer. The highest density of Adamite is along what most collector’s would term the base, followed by another dense band across the “fingers”. Many more Adamite crystals overgrow the Aragonite but are less easily seen due to the lack of colour contrast between the two species. This specimen is most likely from one of the mines in the Kamariza district. A magnificent example of Aragonite and Adamite.
