Taff's Well quarry, close to Cardiff in Wales, is renowned for its magnificent Calcite crystals and most British collections will certainly contain at least one specimen.  However, this example is markedly different in that the joined tips of two light tan scalenohedral crystals are coated in a secondary overgrowth of snow-white Calcite which only reveal the underlying Calcite along their alternating narrow faces, so forming a Mercedes-Benz triangular pattern.  In ultraviolet light this Calcite is rather fascinating.  Under LWUV, the white secondary overgrowth fluoresces chocolate-tan, an unusual fluorescent colour, while the tan Calcite core is completely non-fluorescent, resulting in dark, non-fluorescing stripes along alternate faces.  In SWUV the Calcite fluoresces mid to bright cherry red, primarily from the first generation tan Calcite.  A very different, interesting and attractive miniature Calcite from Taff’s Well with the previous collector’s label, dated May 1974.
