Cassiterite with Tourmaline

ID: CC16854
Access to the China Clay Pits (CCP) around the town of St. Austell in Cornwall is no longer possible, so specimens from these famous workings are becoming ever more sought after.  From the Goonbarrow CCP at Bugle near St. Austell, this small cabinet specimen is composed of granular black Cassiterite and black Schorl, the iron-rich Tourmaline.  This specimen shows how rich the concentration of Cassiterite could be in this area and the complete intermix of this with Schorl strongly suggests pneumatolytic disposition by hot, vapour-laden gases in the upper St. Austell Granite mass.  A splendid specimen containing vugs with Schorl crystals to 1 cm.
