A splendid cabinet example of porcelaneous, creamy white Common Opal on a granitic matrix from Gunheath China Clay Pit at Stenalees, about 4 km north of St. Austell in Cornwall. Look at any map and almost all of the land in this area has been worked for its China clay and show a complex aerial patchwork of disused clay pits and their white spoil heaps. This is an extremely rich and fine example of Common Opal which was collected in August 1978 by the late Maurice Grigg, who worked all his life in the China Clay industry of this region. China clay-related minerals form a fascinating and essential sub-set in any Cornish collection and there could be no finer example of Common Opal.
