A fascinating formation of Galena crystals from Millclose mine in South Darley, close to Matlock in Derbyshire, England. Metallic grey cubic Galena crystals measuring to 1.2 cm display intriguing developments to the cuboctahedral habit. These are dominated by the cube, with tiny bevelled corners representing the octahedron. Alighted epitaxially to many of the larger Galena cube’s corners are cuboctahedral Galena crystals with the emphasis on the octahedron, the opposite to their larger counterparts. This is a remarkable specimen and it is little wonder it is accompanied with a white Richard (Dick) W. Barstow label who always had an eye for the remarkable specimen. The Galena crystals sit on a druse of opaque Quartz with translucent red-brown Sphalerite crystals. It is a fabulous and probably near unique Derbyshire specimen with reliable provenance.
