A remarkable large cabinet size crystal of golden Calcite from the historic Magpie mine near the picturesque village of Ashford-in-the-Water in Derbyshire; just 2 miles north-west of Bakewell, now famous among mineral collectors for its annual Rock Exchange in October. Magpie mine was a Victorian lead mine but is famous for its magnificent Calcites. This intergrown cluster contains four merged crystals, the largest measuring 14.5 cm tall. All crystals are in parallel alignment and sit at about 40 degrees to the horizontal on a perfectly flat cleaved base. The specimen is translucent grading to an opaque white centre and is criss-crossed internally by multiple planes which reflect incident light. A terrific specimen of Calcite from Magpie mine in Derbyshire.
