Smithsonite pseudomorph after Calcite

ID: CC17147
A wonderful specimen from Whatley quarry near Wells in Somerset, England, of cream and tangerine-orange Smithsonite pseudomorphing scalenohedral Calcite crystals to around 2.5 cm tall. The Smithsonite forms buff-cream micro-botryoidal mounds, that have built-up layers to replace the Calcite.  Where the tips of pseudomorphed crystals have been naturally broken, inner tangerine coloured Smithsonite is revealed together with triangular hollow centres.  An unusual and terrific location specimen.
