This small cabinet specimen is a fine example of the rare lead oxyhalide, Mendipite, named for the Mendip Hills in Somerset.  For those unfamiliar with the geography of England, Somerset is the next county after Cornwall and Devon, both of which are better well known for their mineral wealth and mining history.  Excellent blades of pinkish-white Mendipite to 5.5 cm long occupy about one half of a sooty mid-grey manganese nodule, typical of the mineralogy found in isolated lenses within Torr Works quarry at Cranmore in Somerset, about 3 km due east of Shepton Mallet.  Torr Works is a massive quarry which is still in full operation although, sadly for mineral collectors, the manganese pods containing the rare oxychloride suite have long since disappeared as the working faces move further away.  This quarry is often recorded as Merehead Quarry on specimen labels; this along with Torr Works are synonymous, although the latter is the correct name.  The accompanying label is dated April 1976 and this specimen was most likely collected that same year.
