Newhurst quarry, between Shepshed and Loughborough in Leicestershire, works Triassic sandstones, siltstones and mudstones through which occasional copper bearing veins are intersected. This terrific large miniature of Malachite clusters dusted over colourless, dog-tooth Calcite crystals was collected in March 1976 and is a particularly good example for the locality. The Malachite forms as sub-1 mm pisolitic spherules which form clusters of between 2- and 6-mm diameter. The Calcite over which these are attractively scattered forms hundreds of 1 to 2 mm scalenohedral crystals.
