This small cabinet specimen of two intergrown Grossular garnet crystals is an absolute delight; a specimen which I feel will arrest the attention of most mineral collectors, even if Garnets are not their thing!  It is from the find at Arrondissement Diakon in the Kayes Region of Mali in West Africa.  First discovered in 1994, the Grossular in this example forms as two epitaxial aligned crystals, one to about 5.5 cm across and the smaller to 3.2 cm.  Each forms a dodecahedron although these are not complete from where they were attached to the original matrix.  The crystals display a delicious rich apple to lime green outer layer, this shell being some 3 to 8 mm thick beneath which is a Grossular core of translucent glassy dark olive green, appearing almost black.  The specimen does have a few dings, most probably due to contact damage while in-situ, yet remains a totally lovely display piece.
