This fine example of Sphalerite crystals developed over a banded stalactitic nodule of Pyrite is from the still operating Chipping Sodbury quarry close to Yate in South Gloucestershire, England.  This is more commonly known to mineral collectors as Hampstead Farm quarry.  The dull metallic golden Pyrite forms a flattened oval banded nodule with the inner structure visible from both ends.  Over its micro-crystallised surface are hundreds of tiny black Sphalerite crystals, some occasionally developed to 7 or 8 mm across.  This fascinating specimen is highly characteristic of the material occasionally found here.  The specimen is solid and completely stable, but it is recommended it be kept in a reasonably dry atmosphere to avoid degradation of the Pyrite caused by humidity.
